Transformers TCG Factions
Factions represent the major allegiances found throughout the Transformers Trading Card Game. The currently supported game includes six playable factions: Autobots, Decepticons, Mercenaries, Quintessons, Junkions, and Unicron. Maximals and Predacons have also been announced for Org Wave 10: Wild|Fury.
Faction can matter for abilities, Stratagems, deck construction, and other card interactions. Characters from different factions can usually fight on the same team unless a card specifically says otherwise.

Autobots
The Autobots have been playable since Wave 1 and form one half of the game’s original faction divide. Their deep card pool supports the widest spread of strategies in the game, from aggressive openings to defensive teams and highly specialized character builds.
Signature Keyword: Safeguard
Safeguard is a numbered defensive keyword that limits how much damage an undamaged character can take at once. Safeguard numbers add together, and a higher number makes the ability less powerful. See Duplicate Keywords for how that stacking works.
Safeguard 3 (Can’t take more than 3 damage while undamaged.)

Notable Autobot Traits
- The members of the combiner team that form Superion // Sky Protector, the Aerialbots have maintained relevancy and power since their introduction in Wave 2.
- The Dinobots remain a trademark trait within the ranks of the Autobots, from their initial appearance in Wave 1, the combiner team in Wave 2, and other appearances in Wave 5 and Org Wave 9.
- Limited to the 2019 SDCC Convention Pack, the Omnibots remain an enigmatic part of Autobot Cars-related gameplay.
- Forming the mighty Optimus Maximus // Ultimate Defender, characters in the Sentinels team have appeared in powerful tournament decks across the game’s history.
- The Wreckers premiered in Wave 5, with some of its members maintaining high power and value in decks into the post-cancellation era of the game.
Notable Autobot Support Cards
The central Autobot spotlight stratagem, allowing an all-Autobot starting team to include two additional ★ worth of 🟦 battle icon cards.
An alternate stratagem to Heroic Spotlight, this gives your damaged Autobots with Safeguard some additional durability to attack damage, along with an additional ★ worth of battle cards for all-Autobot starting teams.
An effective health bar break, Heroic Resolve can pull an Autobot from the consequences of KO-inducing attack damage for another turn of action.
The powerful Matrix of Leadership can allow your Autobot Leader to give the rest of your team +1 ⚔️ and Pierce 1.

Decepticons
The Decepticons have also been playable since Wave 1 and form the other half of the game’s original faction divide. Their roster is just as broad, supporting aggressive, defensive, disruptive, and combiner strategies.
Signature Keyword: Revenge
Revenge abilities are used when the character is KO’d.
Revenge → Scrap an enemy Weapon or Armor. (Use a character’s Revenge abilities when that character is KO’d.)

Notable Decepticon Traits
- Without dispute the most powerful Micromaster Patrol, the Air Strike Patrol members often appear in part or in full in decks, often with 🟧 and 🟩 battle icon cards.
- Lacking in power with their initial appearance in the Devastator Deck, the Constructicons received critical support in Org Wave 7: Monster Menagerie, propelling the team to the highest levels of the competitive game.
- Greatly feared in the Wave 1 meta, the Insecticons remain a battlefield menace, often appearing in tournament lists many years after their initial reign of terror.
- More known for forming Predaking // Ferocious Hunter than the individual merits of their members, the Predacons still appear occasionally in event lists, often paired with Crude Clubs from Wave 4.
- Unlike the Predacons, the Stunticons have members of repute in their ranks – most notably, Motormaster // Stunticon Leader, whose ability to protect the rest of your team from direct damage keeps him on many modern deck lists.
Notable Decepticon Support Cards
The central Decepticon spotlight stratagem, allowing an all-Decepticon starting team to include two additional ★ worth of 🟧 battle icon cards.
An alternative to Villainous Spotlight, this gives a ★ worth of battle cards for all-Decepticon starting teams, along with retributive Upgrade scraps when your Upgrades on your Revenge characters are scrapped by your opponent’s cards.
Revenge! Even The Score allows for the extra damage done to the defender to be returned to the attacker.
A true boogeyman of the game. Attack with Upgrades with all five battle icon colors while flipping all five battle icon colors, and reward an enemy with 15 points of damage!

Mercenaries
The first Mercenary character arrived as a Wave 3 promo, Nightbird // Enigmatic Agent. The faction later made its full debut in Wave 4: War for Cybertron Siege II, becoming the first additional playable faction introduced after the game’s launch.
Wave 6: World|Strike later expanded Mercenary support substantially with additional characters and cards.
Signature Keyword: Bounty
Bounty abilities are used when the character deals enough attack damage to KO an enemy.
A Bounty ability has two parts: a trigger condition telling you to use the card’s Bounty ability, and the ability itself, which gives a reward. In Wave 4 every trigger condition was the same, though the rewards differed card to card. See Bounty in the Wave 4 FAQ for the official clarifications.
Notable Mercenary Support Cards
Despite being “the alternative” to Enterprising Spotlight, this is the most played Mercenary support stratagem, as it gives 2 ★ worth of ⬛️ battle icon cards if you’re running a singular Mercenary in your starting team.
Mercenaries have some of the most powerful battle cards in the game – and Opportune Offensive is the primary reason for that reputation. Gives +3 ⚔️ and Pierce 3 to an attacking Decepticon if you had a Mercenary on your starting team.
The Autobot counterpart to Opportune Offensive, and a strong card in repair-heavy strategies. With a Toolbox it repairs 4, and its 🟧 and ⬛️ battle icons give it extra value in aggressive and mixed decks.
Continuing the tradition of powerful Mercenary effects, Opportune Shadow can surprise an opponent with up to 3 damage while a Mercenary was on your starting team.

Quintessons
The Quintessons became a full playable faction in Wave 6: World|Strike, the first major community Wave released after official development ended. It arrived as a complete faction, with a full character roster and a substantial package of faction support.
Support has continued beyond World|Strike, establishing Quintessons as a durable part of the modern community card pool.
Signature Mechanics
Quintessons currently have no faction-specific keyword. Their identity emerged instead through a few notable qualities:
- The rigid separations between Melee, Ranged, and Specialist characters within the Quintessons, and card interactions around these “fighting style” traits
- Many Quintesson cards have abilities based around choices
- The Quintesson faction has a notable affinity toward 🟩 battle icons

Notable Quintesson Traits
- Relatively unnoticed at World|Strike’s release, the Allicons were eventually noted as some of the best, low-★ count defensive characters in the game. Allicon Eyuk // Bog Scavenger still appears in meta lists even after an Org Wave 9 nerf.
- Some of the most unique characters in the game are the Judges, characters with 10 or more ★ that often combine high ❤️ totals with powerful Tap abilities.
- Most Quintesson decks are Sharkticon decks, and for good reason! Stratagems like Pit of Judgement and Writhing in the Deep can bring KO’d Sharkticons back to the fight to inflict even more damage!
- The first-ever battle card trait, Tentacles are powerful Weapons for your Quintesson Specialists, stacking in multiples to provide them a host of abilities.
- The Terrorcons earned their name with their premiere in Wave 8, and their abilities as a distinctly anti-Combiner Combiner will cause any combining opponent to reconsider their next moves!
Notable Quintesson Support Cards
The central Quintesson spotlight stratagem, allowing an all-Quintesson starting team to include two additional ★ worth of 🟩 battle icon cards.
The most universal Judge support card, Aspect of Doubt untaps Quintesson Specialists with a bot mode once they’ve attacked or used their Tap ability – and repairs 2 damage from them to boot.
One of the most popular Quintesson cards, Lagartan Spaulders is used in teams across factions due to its consistency over other similar Armors such as Reinforced Plating.
The most powerful “Noble’s Blaster”-type faction weapon in the game, the upgraded character gets Pierce 2 attacking any defender of a faction other than Quintesson as of the 1.2 version of World|Strike.

Junkions
The Junkion faction debuted in Wave 8: Waste|Lands, one of several major expansions that release brought to the game.
Signature Keywords: Bandit and Drifter
Junkions have two faction-associated keywords, Bandit and Drifter. These keywords seem like negative effects at first – but they combo with Bandit and Drifter battle cards to produce some of the most powerful effects in the game.
Bandit (🟦 battle icons flipped by a defending character with Bandit have no effect)
Drifter (🟧 battle icons flipped by an attacking character with Drifter have no effect)
Stations
Stations are a type of card ability introduced in Waste|Lands, not a keyword. A character can enter a Station and remain there until all characters untap, gaining additional stats or abilities determined by that Station while inside it.
Many Junkion characters carry Stations on their alt modes, letting other characters enter them for powerful effects. Junkions can therefore literally ride one another into battle, recalling their most memorable scenes from The Transformers: The Movie.

Notable Junkion Traits
- The sole Junkion-only trait (though its members are also Decepticons), the Road Drones give Detritus // Now With Sleek, Sexy Handling! his power. Your opponent’s Upgrades are in real danger with Detritus and the Road Drones across the table!
Notable Junkion Support Cards
The central Junkion spotlight stratagem, allowing an all-Junkion starting team to include two additional ★ worth of ⬜️ battle icon cards.
A crucial piece of Junkion tech, Regularly Scheduled Programming! can convert a Junkion with printed Bandit into a Drifter Junkion, and vice versa.
One of the Junkion weapons that shows the true power of Bandit, Decelerator Laser makes the negative effects of Bandit contagious, passing them to the defender.
Likely one of the most powerful Relics introduced in War|Void, the Descrambler Box gives powerful attack and defense bonuses at the cost of an Upgrade on the battlefield while it’s on a Junkion Leader.

Unicron
The first Unicron faction character, Armada // Herald of Shrouds, appeared in Wave 6: World|Strike. The faction made its full debut in Org Wave 9: War|Void, which develops it into a complete faction built around the optional Void system.
Signature Keyword: Channel
Channel lets Heralds and Chaosbringers spend the chaos counters accumulated in the Void for additional or enhanced effects. It is a numbered keyword action like Plan, so its numbers do not add together: a player is never asked to Channel more counters than the amount initially indicated. See Duplicate Keywords for how that compares with the additive keywords.
Channel 2 (you may remove up to 2 chaos counters from your Void). Then do damage to an enemy equal to the number of chaos counters you Channeled in this way.
Signature Keyphrase: the Void expands
The Void expands is the first keyphrase introduced to the Transformers TCG, as distinct from a keyword.
When the Void expands, chaos counters are added to it. Non-Herald characters can cause that to happen, while Heralds can use Channel to spend what has accumulated. Powerful Chaosbringers can take part in both halves of that cycle.
See How do the Unicron Void mechanics work? in the Gameplay FAQ for the full rules and examples.

Notable Unicron Traits
- The lowest-★ Unicron characters supported by a the Void expands stratagem, the Aqua Raiders also provide support for your characters with a naturally-high ⚔️ value.
- Representing Unicron in his various incarnations and avatars, Chaosbringers enjoy the abilities to both generate chaos counters for your Void via the Void expands and also to Channel those chaos counters.
- Combining into Grand Galvatron // Triple Z Assimilator, the various members of the Haunted team also provide unique abilities that will also find homes in your non-Unicron decks.
- The Heralds of Unicron provide much of the ability to Channel the chaos counters your non-Heralds have collected for your Void stratagem. The abilities that are unleashed will tip the balance of the game!
- Coming in various forms both in War|Void and in the Marvelous Heroes VS Rising Villains set, the Sweeps provide crucial and surprising support to your teams, often in service to more powerful Heralds.
Notable Unicron Support Cards
The central Unicron spotlight stratagem, allowing a starting team that includes Unicron faction characters to run two additional ★ worth of Unicron faction battle cards.
If your Herald team faces a team with a matching non-Unicron faction, Heart of Darkness increases the stats of your Herald while they’re battling those matching faction enemies, along with an additional ★ of battle cards in your deck.
A strong sideboard option for Herald teams facing heavy Bold or Tough strategies. Umbral Descent can quickly give a Herald a substantial amount of Oppress, along with an additional ★ of battle cards in your deck.
The central card used by Herald teams looking to take advantage of opponent factions with matching Relics, The Darkest Hour can quickly fill a Void with chaos counters with successful Relic matches.
Maximals and Predacons
The Maximal and Predacon factions have been announced for Org Wave 10: Wild|Fury, bringing the major Beast Wars factions into the community game.
Wave 2 previously used Predacon as a character trait, in the same way as Car, Truck, Beast, or Insecticon, including on the team that combines into Predaking. Those characters remain Decepticons and do not retroactively join the Predacon faction introduced in Wild|Fury.
Neither new faction has an announced faction-specific keyword yet. Wild|Fury remains in early development, and more detailed faction identities will be added as the Wave progresses.

No faction…?
Rumor also has it that characters with no faction at all may be prowling somewhere within the unannounced Wild|Fury roster.
Factions and Team Building
Characters from different factions can usually appear on the same starting team. Faction matters when a card specifically checks, rewards, or restricts an allegiance. Always follow the wording on the individual card when a faction requirement applies.
